Modular Madness Critique

I'm very pleased how well received my piece was. Everybody was pretty excited to see it finished, and people even went up that crazy ladder to view it.

Mainly the only parts that were a cause to talk about were how the string was visible, some wished it were done on fishing line. Which was funny, as I tried using it at first but you couldn't get good knots around it and it was a horrible material for sewing, so it had to go. It thankfully wasn't a big deal though. Another point that was brought up was that I had left the ends of the string past the glue just hanging there. Honestly I never thought about trimming them so that was a good point and way to improve the cleanliness of the piece.

Other than that this was quite the spectacle! Big pieces are always attention grabbing and it worked out wonderfully. It could be enjoyed from many points of view so I feel like the ridiculous amount of time that was put into it was well worth it.

Modular Madness Process

For my cranes in flight modular madness piece, I was inspired by the 1000 paper cranes Japanese legend. So it was a little too expensive to buy that much origami paper I settled on one hundred paper cranes. Even though I may not get a wish I can live with a good grade.

I started off wanting to create a chandelier of paper cranes but as soon as I heard like 5 other people were doing something of that sort, I wanted to try something else. Bill brought up birds in flight and then I instanty wanted to do a migratory flight pattern of these birds.

Then came the ridiculously tidious job of learning how to fold a paper crane, and then to make 100 of them. This took hours upon hours, I even folded cranes while I was going into surgery. After completing these plus a bunch for friends, I had sewn a thread through all of their backs to later tie them individually to another long line of thread. Once they all had their threads, I ran the two super long lines down the hallway of my house and then placed them all evenly apart from each other before I tied them accordingly on their lines. Of course when I tied them my parents wanted them out of the way so they sloppily picked up the lines and all the birds bunched into the middle of the line. So I had to go back and respace them and add a small bead of hot glue to each of them so this catastrophy wouldn't occur again. Once they were dry, I packed them into boxes to ship them back to Huntsville. But once they reached the building, I had to find a different location then where I thought I was going to string them, there was no safe way up to the ceiling of the room... so up the death ladder I went! I had to deal with putting them up on a nail and attached to the railing, it was the only placement that made sense. Once I opened the boxes, the lines had became horribly tangled, so it took several hours longer to untangle them. With the master of untangling, Paige, this went much more smoothly, thank you darling! And viola they were attached and finished.

So this was my process with creating my modular madness piece!

They literally take up the entire table space, they were quite interesting to make, especially with the immense scale they are. They are complete with velvet bookmark tabs! Nifty right?

Personality Piece

So here are all the angles of my personality piece.

This turned out to be a hilarious and shocking performance piece, as we can see here in these next pictures...

So the process of creating this consisted of a night absolutely full of baking, I made 10 red velvet cakes and 52 red velvet cupcakes for the after show. As I didn't want anything to go bad or shift on the cake I had to create the glorious cake you see before you all the night before the critique. It was quite a rush job.

Now as for the critique this seemed to go over great with the class. How can you not love a girl smashing a fantastic cake with a giant sledgehammer? Somebody did get the message I was trying to get across that I may display that I'm a sweet wonderful person but underneath all the layers, I'm also incredibly self destructive.

People liked that I used a deep red cake as it was unexpected and could easily represent the inside of a person. Some people said they wished they could have seen the previous version a little longer before the smashing, but when people asked if it was a performance it pretty much forced me to get on with it.

That is pretty much it, I'm happy this went over so well, it was probably my favorite piece to make!

What holds a work of art together?

Conceptually, what holds a piece together is...
point, line, shape, color, texture, and value.
Formally, what holds a piece together is...
repetition, gestalt, placement, balance, symmetry, asymmetry, shape/textures, value/color, position, scale, and proportion

Harmony is strongly related to unity.

Lecture and Reading Summation 10/1/10

Art is composed of a subject, content and form. Within form comes point, line, shape, color, value, space and texture. We can organize these principles as well. Repetition, negative space, change, and a focal point are very important.

Through monotony and chaos, comes harmony and contrast.

To achieve harmony you can use repetition, rhythm, pattern, balance, gravity, texture, symmetry, color, size and asymmetry.

Susan Sontag Writing Assignment

A. This was just a photo taken while my dad and I were on vacation up in Seattle. We both really enjoy carousels and why not experience one in 18 degree weather? The purpose is to capture us in a truly dorky father daughter moment.

B. Emotionally I am very attached to my dad, we do alot of completely random things together such as ride carousels and can be openly expressive.

C. This was a spur of the moment photo that was intended to be viewed by family for maybe a few seconds.

A. The purpose of this photo was to be a dork in public.

B. The photographer that captured this glorious moment was my mother, she loves me no matter what I do. :)

C. This was mean't to be viewed by friends who can laugh at my socially retarded moments, and this was my profile picture on facebook for awhile so it can be viewed for a few weeks.

A. The purpose of this photo was to showcase the massive amount of tattoos this man has.

B. The emotional relationship must be pretty close because this man looks pretty comfortable acting strange. Yet if you could cover your entire body in tattoos you must be pretty damn comfortable anyways...

C. I guess this was intended to be looked at for quite awhile, when I saw this the first time I was pretty shocked and intrigued. People are always judgemental, and this will definitely make you think a little bit.
